The Peak of Fascism in Pakistan

When the public in democratic societies has grievances, they protest. But in Pakistan, protesting against the government or establishment is a crime. The government’s tactic is to suppress dissenting voices. Protesters face dire consequences, such as long-term detention and being implicated in multiple cases.

PTI Under Siege

Particularly, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is in very hot water since the current military establishment took charge. The PTI, led by Imran Khan, is the only popular political party in Pakistan. Imran Khan was ousted from the Prime Minister’s Office in April 2022, through a conspiracy allegedly orchestrated by the US after he made a visit to Russia. The then Chief of Army Staff (COAS) communicated to the US that Imran Khan had made the decision to go to Russia by himself, contrary to the facts.

The Cipher and the Vote of No Confidence

Following that visit, a cipher emerged, calling for Imran Khan’s removal through a vote of no confidence. Despite being ousted, Khan managed to conduct almost 60 rallies throughout the country. However, since the current military establishment came into power, the PTI has been unable to hold even a single rally. The establishment has crossed all limits to crush the PTI. A false-flag operation on May 9, 2023, took place. Despite continuous demands from the PTI for a transparent judicial inquiry into the incident, the establishment did not allow it.

The Detention of Imran Khan

Imran Khan, considered a national hero by millions of Pakistanis, has been illegally detained for a year. He is kept in miserable conditions, in a 7×8 cell with no privileged facilities. Despite being a former Prime Minister, he has been placed in the cell of dangerous terrorists. He cannot meet his party members as per his choice, but only according to the military officers who supervise the jail.

The Plight of PTI Workers

Thousands of PTI workers, including women, were arrested immediately after the May 9, 2023, incident without any proof. Most of them spent many months in jail. In the general elections held on February 2024, PTI was deprived of its election symbol and could not contest elections as a political party. Instead, its candidates were allotted different symbols. Despite these fascist actions, PTI secured 180 seats in the national assembly and led all provincial assemblies. Yet, the election commission played a dirty role by altering the election results. The PTI number of seats were  tuned to 90. But mistakes made in altering the results could be highlighted if a transparent inquiry took place, but the establishment will never allow it.

The Role of the Election Commission and Judiciary

The election commission became an opponent party against the PTI instead of a constitutional institution. It awarded reserved seats of PTI to the other parties, which is unconstitutional and unlawful. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Qaz Faez Esa, played a critical role in helping the election commission to snatch the PTI’s election symbol. His judgments are seen as biased against Imran Khan and the PTI.

Similarly, the Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court, Amir Farooq, has also been criticized for playing into the hands of the establishment against Imran Khan. The establishment uses the judiciary and police as tools against dissent. If the police and judiciary took a stand not to go against the law, it would curtail the establishment’s actions.

Opposition’s View on Intelligence Agencies

In a recent statement, the leader of the opposition in the national assembly, Umer Ayub, said that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Military Intelligence (MI), and Intelligence Bureau (IB) have become mafias, which the establishment uses against its own nation. The public is being pressured not to support the PTI. The name of Imran Khan is banned on all TV channels, and firewall technology has been implemented to filter out mentions of Imran Khan and the PTI.

Media Suppression and Political Pressure

According to reports, YouTube channels favoring the PTI are being throttled, slowing their streaming, while notifications for these channels do not work properly. Currently, PTI Members of the National Assembly (MNAs), who were declared independent, are being pressured by secret agencies not to join the PTI. If state agencies indulge in political maneuvering, the country cannot effectively face external challenges.

The Impact on Civil Liberties

The suppression of PTI and its supporters has broader implications for civil liberties in Pakistan. The right to free speech, peaceful assembly, and political participation are fundamental democratic principles. However, these rights are being systematically undermined. The fear of detention, harassment, and violence has created a chilling effect. Many citizens are now afraid to express their political views openly.

The curtailment of media freedom is another alarming trend. Independent journalism is under siege. Journalists who report on sensitive issues, especially those related to PTI or Imran Khan, face intimidation and threats. Some have been detained, while others have been forced to flee the country. This erosion of press freedom not only stifles public debate but also hampers the public’s right to be informed.

The Role of the International Community

The international community has a critical role to play in addressing the rising fascism in Pakistan. Human rights organizations, foreign governments, and international media must hold the Pakistani establishment accountable. Diplomatic pressure and public condemnation can be effective tools. They can compel the government to respect democratic norms and human rights.

International bodies such as the United Nations and the European Union should closely monitor the situation. They should send observers to ensure that any future elections are free and fair. Additionally, they should provide support to local civil society organizations working to defend human rights and democracy.

The Path Forward for PTI

Despite the severe crackdown, PTI and its supporters remain resilient. The party’s leadership is exploring various strategies to overcome the current challenges. These include legal battles, international advocacy, and grassroots mobilization. PTI’s legal team is working tirelessly to challenge the unlawful actions taken against the party and its members. They are filing petitions in the courts to seek justice.

On the international front, PTI is reaching out to foreign governments and international organizations. They are highlighting the human rights abuses and the suppression of democracy in Pakistan. The aim is to garner international support and apply pressure on the Pakistani establishment.

Grassroots mobilization remains a cornerstone of PTI’s strategy. The party is using social media and other digital platforms to connect with supporters. They are organizing virtual rallies and awareness campaigns to keep the spirit of resistance alive. Despite the challenges, PTI is committed to continuing its fight for a democratic Pakistan.

The Importance of Unity Among Opposition Parties

The current situation also calls for unity among opposition parties. A fragmented opposition only strengthens the hand of the establishment. Therefore, PTI must seek alliances with other political parties that share its commitment to democracy. Joint protests, coordinated legal actions, and unified public statements can amplify their collective voice.

However, building these alliances will require compromise and trust-building. PTI must be willing to engage in dialogue and find common ground with other opposition parties. This unity can create a formidable front against the undemocratic actions of the establishment.

The Public’s Role in Defending Democracy

Ultimately, the defense of democracy in Pakistan lies in the hands of its citizens. The public must remain vigilant and proactive. They must continue to raise their voices against injustices and support democratic principles. This can be done through peaceful protests, social media activism, and by participating in the political process.

Educating the masses about their rights and the importance of democracy is crucial. Civil society organizations, educational institutions, and the media must play their part in this. An informed and engaged citizenry is the backbone of any democracy. They can hold the government accountable and ensure that their voices are heard.

Lessons from History

Pakistan’s history is replete with instances of political turmoil and authoritarianism. However, it also has a rich legacy of resistance and resilience. The current challenges are not insurmountable. By drawing lessons from the past, Pakistan can navigate through these difficult times.

One of the key lessons is the importance of unity and solidarity. In the past, when political forces united, they managed to bring about significant changes. The Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD) in the 1980s is a prime example. It was a collective effort of various political parties and civil society groups that eventually led to the end of military rule.

The Need for Institutional Reforms

For lasting change, Pakistan needs comprehensive institutional reforms. The judiciary, election commission, and law enforcement agencies must be reformed to ensure their independence and impartiality. These institutions should be free from political influence and function according to the constitution.

Judicial reforms are particularly crucial. An independent judiciary is the cornerstone of a democratic society. It ensures that the rule of law is upheld and that citizens’ rights are protected. Similarly, the election commission must be restructured to conduct free and fair elections. It should be a neutral body that ensures a level playing field for all political parties.

Hope and Action

The peak of fascism in Pakistan is a dark chapter in the country’s history. However, it is also a moment that can galvanize the forces of democracy. By standing together, speaking out, and demanding justice, the people of Pakistan can reclaim their democracy. The journey will be challenging, but with resilience and determination, a brighter future is possible.

The public, political parties, and the international community must work together. They must ensure that democracy is not just a lofty ideal but a lived reality for every Pakistani. The road ahead is long, but every step taken in the right direction brings Pakistan closer to a just and democratic society.

A Call for Democratic Norms

The establishment should stop playing with the country’s fate. It should refrain from politics. Election result manipulation must be avoided, and the abduction of politicians must be halted. The public should be allowed to choose their representatives without fear or hurdles. Only then can Pakistan hope to restore democratic norms and ensure a fair political landscape.
